United States vs Gurinderjit Singh — extortion and gang-linked crime

In an international crackdown named 'Operation Hard Ball', law enforcement agencies in the United States, Canada and Europe arrested 24 persons connected to India-based transnational organised crime syndicates. The operation, led by the FBI, targeted criminal networks allegedly involved in murder, extortion, drug trafficking, firearms offences and organised crime activities spanning multiple countries. An SHO (Station House Officer) from Punjab is among those the FBI seeks to extradite as part of the investigation.

Punjab police inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra was arrested after being indicted by the US FBI in connection with an extortion conspiracy involving an India-based organised crime syndicate. The investigation revealed that Nagra extorted and accepted Rs 16 lakh as illegal gratification from a US-based family.

The FBI charged Punjab police officer Gurinderjit Singh Nagra and gangster Lawrence Bishnoi with running an India-based transnational crime syndicate involved in extortion, targeted killings, shootings, and narcotics trafficking. Prosecutors alleged the officer fabricated a murder case and extorted $400,000 from a victim's family in exchange for dropping charges.

An IPS officer was arrested in connection with a fake drug bribery scheme involving Rs 3 crore. The officer allegedly sought money to 'fix' a CBI case related to a counterfeit medicine racket. Several politicians were also found to be involved in the investigation.

Former Trinamool Congress councillor Debraj Chakraborty was arrested and faced 10 additional extortion cases and land-grab complaints within 24 hours of arrest. He and his wife, former TMC legislator and singer Aditi Munshi, have been booked in multiple cases including extortion, money laundering, criminal intimidation, and asset disproportionate to income. Both CBI and Enforcement Directorate are investigating various charges.

A CBI FIR registered following a complaint from the Supreme Court Registry targeting an organized digital arrest scam network operating across 16 Indian states including Rajasthan. Fraudsters used fake domains to convince victims they were under investigation and extorted money under the guise of 'digital arrest'.
