State vs. Various accused — Manipur ethnic violence and sexual assault case

Multiple criminal cases arising from Aland communal violence in Karnataka. The Siddaramaiah government attempted to withdraw these cases through government orders, but the Karnataka High Court has stayed and blocked the withdrawal attempts, ruling that the executive cannot usurp the independent discretion vested in public prosecutors under Section 321 CrPC.

Former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain and four others were convicted in the murder of Intelligence Bureau officer Ankit Sharma during the February 2020 Delhi communal violence. Police alleged Hussain's residence functioned as an operational base for rioters, with recovery of stones, petrol bomb materials, acid packets and other items. A chargesheet was filed on June 3, 2020.

Eleven men were accused of rioting, arson, and vandalism during communal violence that erupted in Khargone, Madhya Pradesh, on April 10, 2022, during a Ram Navami procession. A sessions court acquitted all 11 accused after finding the prosecution had failed to prove the charges, citing investigative lapses and eyewitness identification failures.

A homestay owner in Kodagu was arrested on April 19 on charges related to the rape of a US tourist. The Karnataka High Court found the arrest illegal and ordered ₹5 lakh compensation for breach of Fundamental Rights. The final chargesheet dropped rape and criminal intimidation charges, though investigation into the underlying matter continues.

Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam are accused of alleged conspiracy related to large-scale communal violence that erupted in northeast Delhi in February 2020. Their fresh bail pleas were rejected by the Delhi court. The case invokes multiple IPC provisions and UAPA offences.

Ninety-five criminal cases, mainly involving Muslims accused in communal incidents as well as activists of pro-Kannada, farmer and Dalit groups, were ordered to be withdrawn by the Siddaramaiah government in two separate orders (October 15, 2024 and May 27, 2026). The Karnataka High Court has intervened multiple times to block these withdrawal orders, citing that individual prosecutors hold prosecutorial discretion under Section 321 of the CrPC.
